help with brakes was created by VikkiGT4
I seem to keep warping my brakes and it's starting to annoy me! I get new disks and pads (Toyota originals as advised by Ian at TR&D) and I break them in over 1000 miles, no hard breaking or sudden stopping or anything then after a while I can feel the brake pedal vibrating under my foot, very slightly at first then getting worse and worse! now I just don't understand how the bleeding hell this is happening when I'm so careful!! and not to mention it costing me a bloody fortune!

anywho

just wondering, could this be because I'm not getting enough air to my brakes? therefore they are getting too hot and causing heat spots and thereby warping? my alloys are extremely close to my calipers and when I mean extremely close I mean I can't even get my finger between the back of the alloy and my caliper - could this be the reason they are warping?

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!!

the calliper been so close may be an issue but i wouldnt of thought so, other thing is what condition are ur callipers in if they are sticking very slightly then that will heat the disc up and warp it pretty quickly

both sides have had a caliper repair kit done on them from the last time my brakes warped so there shouldn't be a problem with the calipers

it's just I thought that if there wasn't enough air venting the brakes then maybe thats why they are getting too hot and warping

ST205's can develop problems with the calipers sticking.. i know you had them both repaired with kits, but who did the work?......

ST205's arn't the simplist cars, the calipers have Clip / bracket things (not those V shaped spring things for noise reduction, (w shaped ones for the 205)) in them which have to be taken out before the caliper should come off and have to be put back in the right way round, otherwise you get a clunking type noise from them....... and don't get me started on the superstrut......... anywhay i'm babbling, my point is was it a garage who repaired them?

In regards to the Wheels being close to the calipers, What size wheels are they, 17's i assume, from memory there not standard are they?

Brake disks, how many have you gone through? Were they all genuine toyota, or aftermarket ones, if they where aftermarket ones what make, and are there known problems with them? or more specifically known problems with GT4's?

If i were to guess, i would say it's a fault with the calipers, but.........

bloomin' eck Tony lol

the wheels are 17s standards are 16s

this is my second lot in the last year! the last ones weren't genuine toyota but these ones are!

my friend's Dad who has been a mechanic for 40 odd years did the work, he does all my work and he's top notch - he knows what he's doing so no qualms there!

Hi Vikki.......you shouldn't have warped your discs in the duration of time you have stated......it would take either track time or harsh e-stops to do that..i agree with the guys.....think you have sticking calipers.....try driving a reasonable distance using your brakes very lightly........then carefully feel around the brake discs..calipers...wheels etc..to see if any heat has built up due to friction.........may be worth a go........

ok so drove gently home last nite, hardly using the brakes - when I got home the front driver side caliper was cold as were all the other ones, but the disk was quite hot, the front passenger and rear drivers disks were cold but the rear passenger was too hot to touch!

was really hoping it wasn't going to be a case for new calipers but I can't think of anything else to try :(

ok so just got quote from our Celica Friends TCB for a caliper - £75 for second hand and £105 for reconditioned - so it's not too bad. Think after seeing Ray on Saturday and getting him to confirm the sticky caliper situation I might order myself a 2nd hand caliper from TCB have my disks skimmed and see if the problem goes away

bloody celica!

been to see my friend Ray and we've come to the conclusion that it's the rear passenger side caliper that's sticking. So this weekend my friend Steve will be taking my caliper apart and reconditioning it for me BLESS HIM :D at the same time I'm gonna paint my calipers afresh and change my rear disks and pads

then if it does it again I'm gonna scream :D
