this is standard turbo - internal wastegate

when turbo reaches peak boost that your actuator allows (or is set to) this 'gate' or valve, which is connected to the actuator, opens, allowing excess exhaust pressure back into the exhaust and out the system. actuator is a small unit that works off vacuum pipe from TB i believe.

external wastegate/ screamer pipe

usually when you get a mahoosive turbo, some have no wastegates, so an external wastegate is used. similar principle as above, but its a seperate unit rather than built into the turbo.

usually excess exhaust gasses go back into the exhaust system, but with a screamer pipe, the excess gasses are sent via a seperate pipe straight to atmosphere. on full beans this causes a screaming sound, hence screamer pipe.

this is how i enterprate it, because i was once knowledgeless.
